Sardinia is intensifying measures against bovine dermatitis following a suspected case in Orotelli. Samples from an affected animal are being tested as all livestock movements are halted across the island. Authorities await a government decision on extending quarantine restrictions amid growing concerns in the countryside after the first national case was confirmed in Orani.

Sardinia faces a rising concern over bovine dermatitis as authorities intensify checks across the island. Particularly, Orotelli is in the spotlight due to a suspected case related to an animal on a local farm. Blood and scab samples have been taken from the animal, with tests currently being conducted at the Zooprophylactic Institute of Sassari. Now, these samples have been sent to the Institute of Teramo for final confirmation, while another sample is under examination.

Just five days prior, Sardinia confirmed the first national case of this disease at a farm in Orani. In response, officials have implemented a halt on all livestock movements. This includes the export of sheep, goats, pigs, and horses, and it likely affects slaughtering processes as well. This sweeping measure aims to contain any further spread of the condition.

As quarantine restrictions remain in place, the island’s government is expected to provide clear guidelines regarding ongoing measures. Currently, the restrictions imposed are set to last for ten days, but if more cases emerge, this duration may be extended. Consequently, the mood in the Sardinian countryside is notably tense, with farmers and ranchers anxiously awaiting additional developments.
